Materials Engineering Group (MEG) was formed by the British Railways Board as a centre for materials testing in respect of Welding, Non Destructive Training & Testing, Metallurgy, and Weld Repairs; as well as setting standards where standards had not previously existed.

Privatised in 1996, MEG has diversified from its traditional "Railway only" customer base to provide services to all industrial sectors including military, power generation, light rail, transportation, etc.

Based in the Railway Technical Centre, MEG offers a fully operational welding school with an enviable reputation; capable of training and testing to national and international welding standards.

As appointed welding procedure agents for Zurich Insurance PLC; MEG offer 3rd party accreditation for all procedures and welder approvals. MEG's quality systems are accredited in accordance with ISO standards and hold current Link up accreditation.

WELDER TRAINING

Materials Engineering (UK) Ltd provide welding courses either inhouse or in the 14-bay Welder Training Centre at Stephenson House. These courses vary in length between one day and two weeks and are always customised for the customers' particular needs.

WELDING SERVICES

We offer a comprehensive range of welding technology services. Our Welding Engineers and Technologists prepare these to British, European, American and Railway Group standards.

For Welding Repair, we provide a total solution which includes prompt response to all enquiries, with repairs effected at our headquarters in Derby or at sites throughout the UK.

NDT

We can provide support including structural analysis to verify compliance with Group Standards for rail vehicle refurbishment, modification and conversion for both passenger and freight.

We investigate failure into rail components, assessing the failure mode and detailing steps to take to prevent future failures.

We also provide Ultrasonic Axle Testing and procedure formulation.

METALLURGICAL SERVICES

We can provide metallurgical support including verification of material conformance, failure investigations and advise on the choice of materials and treatments to maximise performance and reduce manufacturing costs.
